Today, the Treasury bond market reached a 24-year high across the 10-year, 20-year, and 30-year maturities. The 10-year climbed to 5.365%, the 20-year reached 5.77%, and the 30-year hit 5.732% (1&2). The message from the bond market is clear: investors are demanding greater compensation given persistent inflation pressures, energy supply constraints, elevated government borrowing, and rising oil prices. Adding to the pressure, the Federal Reserve is expected to raise rates at least once more before year-end.

Compounding these dynamics, heavy borrowing by AI-related companies, totaling billions of dollars, is placing additional pressure on long-dated Treasury buyers as the government brings new issuances to market. And it’s not just a domestic story: a global bond selloff is now underway in the UK, Japan, France, and Germany, adding further strain to long-term yields worldwide.

Looking ahead, investors will be watching several key catalysts: September CPI data on October 14th, the Fed’s next policy meeting on October 27–28, and the Treasury’s quarterly refunding announcement in November. For now, pressure in the bond market is likely to persist, but these yield levels remain highly attractive, offering investors a compelling opportunity to lock in rates, dollar-cost average, or enter the market at levels rarely seen in recent history.
